The method
I teach the same way I shoot, by subtraction.
We do not start with the rule of thirds. We start with attention. What is the subject doing? Where is the light? What is competing with it? Once those questions are clear, the camera settings and edit have a job to do.
We start with what is happening: light, behaviour, distance, background, and time.
Then we decide what to leave out, so the subject has room to come forward.
After the shutter, we look at why the image works or where the eye gets lost.
