This is not a birding holiday. It's four days of slowing down, learning to read winter light, anticipate behaviour, and bring home a small set of frames you'll actually keep.

Most photographers who go to Bharatpur for the first time come back with too many photographs and not enough good ones. The park is generous, over 350 species in a small area, many of them habituated to the rickshaws, and the temptation is to keep shooting.

This workshop is built around the opposite habit. Two long field sessions a day, with real time in between to look at what you photographed. Evenings on the laptop, picking apart the keepers and the near-misses. By Day 3 you'll be slowing down on your own. By Day 4 you'll be passing on frames you would have shot on Day 1.

That's the work. Four days at one wetland, learning to see it properly.

The place

Bharatpur, up close.

Keoladeo, a former royal duck reserve, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, concentrates around 350 bird species into 29 sq km of wetland and grassland. Deep winter, January and February, is the peak window: Central Asian and Siberian visitors are on the lake, residents are deep into courtship and nesting, and the mornings come in with winter mist and low golden light. The combination, proximity (the e-rickshaw trails put you within metres of active nests), behaviour (you'll watch the same birds across multiple sessions, learning what they're about to do), and time (two long field sessions a day, no rushed transfers), is rare. It rewards photographers who slow down.

Birds & behaviour

Painted storks and open-bills at the nest, kingfishers diving, sarus cranes in pair display. Static subjects you can study, then frame deliberately.

Birds in flight & motion

Pelicans gliding low across the lake, raptors quartering the marsh, smaller waders flushing. The technical side: panning, shutter, focus modes, anticipation.

Mood & environment

Winter mist over the wetland, soft reflections, wide environmental frames where the bird is part of the landscape, not the whole subject. Where most of the workshop's most-loved frames come from.

We plan for the best chances, deep winter at Keoladeo is well-studied and the rickshaw drivers know the active nests and roosts. But wildlife is wild. I never guarantee specific species or specific shots.

Taught by someone who still shoots every season.

I keep every group small enough to sit with your raw files each evening, the same daily image review I’d have wanted as a student. I won’t promise sightings. I’ll teach you to read the light and the behaviour, and come home with a small set of frames you actually keep.

Every day follows the same shape

Pre-dawn, into the park

Out before the sun. E-rickshaw through the gate as the mist lifts, working the cleanest dawn light of the day with the park to ourselves.

All day, full field session

Packed breakfast and lunch in the field. No rushed return to the hotel. We work the golden hours at both ends, and use the harsh midday to study behaviour and slow down.

After dinner, review and edit

Laptops out. Live post-processing on real files from the day, individual portfolio review, and a short session on storytelling and sequencing, different focus each evening.

Arrival & first light

Pickup from Delhi Airport (IGI) at 09:00 AM. Drive to Bharatpur, check in, welcome lunch. Park orientation at 02:00 PM, ecosystems, species, photographic opportunities. First afternoon session in Keoladeo. Group dinner: first impressions, gear shake-down, plan for Day 2.

Day 2

Full immersion, dawn to dusk

Pre-dawn departure. Full-day field session focused on behaviour, light management, and creative framing. After dinner: live post-processing demo and first round of individual image reviews.

Day 03

Day 3

Deepening practice

Pre-dawn departure. Targeted assignments based on Day 2 work, gaps in technique, opportunities in composition. One-on-one image reviews through the midday break. Evening: sequencing and storytelling, how to build a small body of work from a single trip.

Final session & departure

Last pre-dawn shoot in the park. Breakfast at 09:30 AM, check-out and departure for Delhi Airport (IGI) at 10:30 AM, arriving by 3:00 PM.

Fitness

Easy. The park is explored mostly by e-rickshaw on flat tracks, with short walks to vantage points. The pace is slow and patient, the work is in waiting and watching, not covering distance. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and layered clothing for fluctuating winter weather (10–15°C in the mornings, 20–25°C in the afternoons).

Stay & arrival

We stay at a comfortable, well-located property close to the park gate, single-occupancy rooms for everyone, clean food, reliable hot water and power. Photography days are long; the room is where you sleep and back up files, not where you spend time. Properties are confirmed at booking and detailed in the prep pack.

Pricing is per photographer for Indian residents, single occupancy included. A deposit holds your seat; final payment is due 21 days before the start date. Foreign citizens, please reach out directly; pricing differs for international participants.

Full refund for cancellations made 90 or more days before the start date. Cancellations within 30 days are non-refundable in policy, but I'll do my best to fill your seat, and if I can, you get a full refund. Final payment is due 21 days before the workshop.

Questions

Before you book.

How is this different from a normal birding tour or safari?

A birding tour is built around listing species. This is built around making photographs you want to keep. Two long sessions a day instead of three or four short ones, daily image review on the laptop, evening post-processing workshops, and time to actually slow down. You'll see fewer species in total than a hardcore birder, but you'll come back with images that have something to say.

How small is the group, and how does the rickshaw work?

Maximum 7 photographers. Inside the park we split between e-rickshaws, usually 3–4 photographers per rickshaw with a birding-veteran driver. You're never crowded out of a frame, and rotation across sessions means everyone gets the best vantage points.

What gear do I need? What if I don't have a big lens?

A 200–600mm zoom (or equivalent) is ideal but not essential, Bharatpur's strength is access, and a 100–400mm on a crop sensor reaches a long way here. Many participants do the entire workshop on one zoom. If you're unsure, send me your gear list when you enquire and I'll tell you honestly what works and what doesn't.

Can a non-photographer partner come along?

Yes, Bharatpur is a beautiful park and the non-photographer pace works for birders, walkers and readers. Reach out and I'll share the partner add-on cost (accommodation, meals, park fees). They won't get the field mentoring, but the rest of the experience is the same.

What's the payment and cancellation policy?

A deposit holds your seat. Final payment is due 21 days before the start date. Full refund if you cancel 90 or more days before; within 30 days the deposit is non-refundable in policy, but I'll do my best to fill the seat and refund you if I can.
