Khangchendzonga rises from cloud forest to the world's third-highest peak, a Sikkim wilderness reached on long, hard treks. Snow leopard, red panda and blue sheep range across its slopes.

Why this place matters

India's first mixed natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage site, protecting a large high-Himalayan wilderness whose main summit is left unclimbed out of respect for local belief.
