Palamu, which takes in Betla National Park, is an old forest on the Chota Nagpur plateau. Tigers are few now, but it remains a stronghold for wild elephant and gaur.

Why this place matters

Historically legendary as the site of the world's first tiger census based on pugmarks in 1932.
